Once on the brink of extinction, the American alligator has become one of the nation’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories. Scales of Success: The Triumph of the American Alligator brought together conservation leaders, government officials, industry representatives, and other partners in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the remarkable recovery of the species and the collaborative management efforts that made it possible.
The program highlighted Louisiana’s alligator management program and the decades of science-based management, habitat conservation, regulated harvest, and sustainable use that have helped alligator populations thrive while supporting the wetlands and communities that depend on them. The event also recognized the partnerships among state and federal agencies, landowners, farmers, ranchers, and conservation organizations that continue to make the American alligator a model for successful wildlife conservation.
Partners in Conservation
The recovery of the American alligator is a story built on partnership. Scales of Success brought together federal officials, state wildlife agencies, international conservation organizations, private landowners, licensed alligator farmers, and leaders from across the global leather industry to celebrate a conservation model recognized around the world.
Representatives from luxury brands, alligator farms, Louisiana landowners, tanneries, manufacturers, the International Crocodilian Farmers Association (ICFA), IUCN Crocodile Specialist Group, wildlife agencies, and conservation organizations joined the event—reinforcing the importance of collaboration across the entire supply chain. Together, these partnerships demonstrate how science, traceability, responsible stewardship, sustainable use, and commerce can work together to conserve wildlife while supporting communities and working landscapes.

The Story on Film
The centerpiece of the Washington, D.C. event was the U.S. premiere of Scales of Success: The Triumph of the American Alligator, a documentary produced by the Origins Foundation and Samuel Rivera Films. The film chronicles how wildlife agencies, scientists, private landowners, alligator farmers, and the leather industry worked together to transform the American alligator into a global model for sustainable use.
